Studio dancing
BRIT School Musical Theatre extension, Croydon CR20 2HN
A new naturally ventilated dance studio extension to a Victorian school building, inserting boldly but elegantly into its north-west courtyard, exploiting the existing form at ground, first, and second floor level.
The one newly created three-storey elevation will be matching brick externally and furnished with a generous ‘rose-window’ that lightens the new façade onto the neighbouring primary school and floods the newly created ground, first, and second floors with ample natural north light.
Inside, the works will house a variety of flexible spaces of the right number, size, shape and adjacency to suit the BRIT School’s burgeoning needs, with the new second-floor providing a large floor plate and generous ceiling height to create a large new performance studio.
This ambitious approach, conceived to celebrate the BRIT trust’s ongoing commitment to the school, is intended to create an exciting evolution of the existing fabric that contributes significantly to operationalising the School’s Vision and securing a sustainable source of revenue, helping to support and secure the prosperous future of itself and its students.
