View of Voysey

New house replacing Bury Farmhouse

“He built what was to be useful and enjoyable, that was all. Hence the undated perfection of the best of his work.” (Nikolaus Pevsner 1941)

Located in a picturesque village in Uttlesford district, inspired by Voysey’s own home and in turn by the English vernacular of the 16th and 17th Centuries, this new house in Felsted is a robust timber framed structure sat on high red brick plinths with a dual pitched roof and a generous cat-slide falling towards the east with lead dormers, Oak mullioned horizontal ribbon windows and a rough lime plaster finish.

It’s low-carbon, low-energy, highly insulated, made from sustainable materials and powered to cost very little to run. It’s fully accessible, with well-connected and proportioned rooms with large windows giving ample daylight and long views while maintaining privacy. Accompanying the main house, a cart lodge and garden office lie to the north: these of oak frame and boarding, red brick in lime mortar plinth wall, slate roof and cast iron / aluminium gutters.

The approach towards the front door is a gravel drive with a side path leading towards the back gardens, well protected visually by surrounding mix of new trees, ornamental shrubs and taller-growing species, with a curated view towards the existing pond and gardens to the north of the site.
