For Open Studios ’17, SCABAL presents a non-zero sum game in which players will cooperate for mutual benefit.
We are happy to advise each other on what to buy. We are happy to ask people how to fix things. Apply this willingness to one of society’s major challenges – the unaffordable and, for most, impenetrable housing market – and we can create an alternative model for housing, which blurs the line between real and virtual communities. Harnessing a community united by one desire – to own a home – means that we can create collaborative, self-organised and participatory building solutions that overcome many of the significant obstacles faced by individuals.
Through the collective invention, making and playing of a collaborative card game to build an imaginary apartment block, a House of Cards, SCABAL and guests will spend a day asking and answering questions around the patronage, ownership and procurement of housing. Players will be equipped with tools and strategies so they can actively participate in planning and building their own model housing development through interactions which help them select their requirements for location, space and budget.
This problem-solving activity is approached playfully in a day-long drop-in workshop at SCABAL’s studios at 25 Hatton Garden EC1N 8BQ, from 10.00am to 5.00pm on Friday 23rd June. To book a place go to studio@scabal.net or drop in on the day.
