Old skins for new
Dunmow Farmyard ~ 9 new houses from 6 existing farm buildings, unmoved.
Dunmow Farm has built up over a long time. Its seven barns casually sit together, each in their own way. This project leaves the loose ensemble as found, in position and form to make a thriving collection of high-quality, low carbon dwellings. Six original disparate agricultural buildings are reconstructed and converted into into nine dwellings, all around a shared public realm created from the historic farmyard.
Each new dwelling is given a private back garden surrounded by shared woodland and meadow. The shared yard is kept clear of vehicles, all parking covered by dedicated use of existing farm buildings or new cart lodges in the farmyard.
The existing structures, supporting the roofs and walls are retained and reused in all cases, allowing each building its precise scale, appearance and place in the ensemble..
