Masterplan for City Extension, Macheng, Hubei Province, China
Whilst in China, asked on a Friday afternoon to plan a city expansion by next Monday, we sketched in Hubei province’s capital Wuhan the masterplan for an extension to the nearby city of Macheng, situated where one of China’s main north-south railway lines was destined to be crossed by a new main west-east railway line. Back in London the neat lines of a new masterplan was drawn up by our weekend team ready for email by Monday morning Chinese time.
The extension plan makes an interwoven overlay of new streets on existing man-made and natural features to make a tartan grid of different thoroughfare speeds, neighbourhood avenues and green spots, a connected string of park and play spaces with two grand commercial boulevards to focus connection between old Macheng to the east, its Jushui river to the south and its two new railway stations to the north and the west.
