A Priori

Almshouses, priory, homes

These early Grade I Listed C17 Almshouses are made up of two rectangular courtyards formed by low ranges of one room deep, running north to south and east to west, split by a higher central range. with a chapel built off the east end. Once housing twenty individual dwellings, ten in each quadrangle, the overall  form is kept intact to make four houses, West House, North House, East and South House, each sharing ownership of these courtyards. Glazed linking corridors are added to the North and the South Houses to better manage their internal circulation.

Detached existing buildings on site, the ancient River Barn and the 1990s built Abbey Barn, become two more dwelling houses. A new house,  Slade Barn, reinstates an agricultural building found through the examination of historic maps and an aerial photograph from WWII.

The gardens to six houses sit within the college wall,  divided by access pathways and hedges concealing fences, diminishing the sense of private boundaries. New driveways and carports, bespoke to each property sit apart from the main buildings.

Full Planning Permissions and Listed Building Consents were granted on 24th March 2025 and an S73 on 15th May 2025.
