Wormwood Scrubs Masterplan
Pedestrian floodlit clearway
Masterplan for Wormwood Scrubs park and environs, London
What if it were a horseless course?
Commissioned by the White City Partnership to compile multiple outline plan proposals in and around the park. Adopted by the London Borough of Hammersmith and Fulham as design guidance for all future development related to Wormwood Scrubs Park. At least for a while.
Through some twenty-five discrete but interrelated projects all scales of intervention that identify new initiatives for policy, use, funding and transformation, the masterplan strategy examines ways in which Wormwood Scrubs can be improved for those who use it now and to encourage new users.
Designed as a listening device, the Development Strategy creates an evolving forum for the diverse range of locals, management and other interested parties to explore their perceptions and desires for Wormwood Scrubs.
The all-scale fractal strategy, where each part of which has the same statistical character as the whole, uses the proportions of an A4 sheet of paper to convey representations of the park and its surroundings by means of a tiling system, gridding the park into one tile, twenty-five tiles, four hundred tiles, enables CABAL to work from the very heart of Wormwood Scrubs whilst maintaining a strategic overview. To be in it and looking down on it simultaneously allows the participant to observe and the observer to participate.
Final exhibition of the strategy at 1:500 scale, 400 paper jet-printed tiles mounted on plywood, overall dimensions 4800 x 3200mm.
